How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed spare audi key that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars read more which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
